Compass is delighted to present one of Britain’s greatest comedy dramas here at the Gaiety – The Rise and Fall of Little Voice. Jim Cartwright’s award winning play has gained international recognition and was adapted into a Golden Globe winning film with Jane Horrocks and Michael Caine.
Little Voice and Mari Hoff, her mother, are as far apart in character as can be. LV, quiet and unassuming, gets comfort and joy from music’s most iconic singers: Judy Garland, Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey. Mari prefers the sound of her own voice, indulging in a life of booze, cheap thrills and seedy men.
When Mari starts dating small-time club promoter Ray Say, LV’s astonishing singing impersonations thrust her into the spotlight. Will she be Ray Say’s one and only chance to hit the big time?
Little Voice explores the highs and lows of small-town dreams, family rivalry and finding your voice in a noisy world. With humour, heart and powerhouse ballads all performed live on stage, this life-affirming production is a must see!
Little Voice is a local amateur production, directed by Christine Stanley.
