Past. Present. Future. Sometimes love is tangled between the three.
East Ayrshire, 1888. Catherine’s husband has just died without a will, leaving her with four children and without means. Living in a tightly policed society where destiny is defined by gender and social standing, her claim on the curling stone factory her husband owned half of is reliant on the goodwill of her brother-in-law – a man she’s depending on to look out for her best interests. Striking a deal seems to be her only way forward – until a double cross leaves Catherine with the choice to either cede her independence or forge a dangerous and solitary path forward.
What the men in her life haven’t counted on is the steely core of an Ayrshire woman, a core that led Catherine to found a company still renowned across the world today for sports equipment made from a unique local resource: granite.
Based on an extraordinary true story from Ayrshire’s history, and woven through with Scottish folk songs, Granite is about expectation, the ties of family, and where we find hope.
An original story presented by The Gaiety, supported by Creative Scotland.
