The Whaler’s Wife

Written by Izzy Gray
Directed by Beth Morton
Set in 1820s Orkney, three rebellious women must chart their own course when the sea returns truths that their town tried to bury.
At Hamnavoe harbour, Marion, Elsie and Bess are preparing to navigate the long months of hunting season as their husbands venture off into the Arctic wilderness to chase fortune across uncharted waters.
The women keep their town alive through wit, enterprise and a few illicit schemes. But when a local woman disappears and secrets are revealed, survival turns to rebellion as the stories that held the community together begin to wash away.
The Whaler’s Wife is a bold new play by Izzy Gray (Keepers of the Light), blending sea shanties, bawdy humour and Orcadian folklore to tell a powerful story of female resilience.
