‘Respect your teachers. Obey them. Accept their punishments. Punishment may include being hit with a whip, cane, belt, shoe, ruler or paddle. Failure to accept this punishment will result in more punishment’.
In 1987, corporal punishment was banned in UK state schools. The role of school children was key in bringing an end to this terrible practice, as young people from all over the UK joined to lead strikes, protests, marches and riots in order to make their voices heard. The Playground Protests is a brand-new musical, telling the stories of brave young people who weren’t afraid to stand up and fight for their rights.

Scotland’s National Festival of Youth Theatre (NFYT) creates an explosion of young creative talent. It is a celebration of the power of youth theatre, and is the largest gathering of youth theatres in the UK.

NFYT enables young people to celebrate a shared passion, and so offers them opportunities to develop as artists and creative thinkers. With an emphasis on inclusion, education and collaboration, NFYT aims to remove barriers, teach valuable life skills, and provide extraordinary new experiences.

Pitching its marquee in Ayr for the fourth festival in a row, the National Festival of Youth Theatre (otherwise known as #NFYT2024) features performances on The Gaiety main stage from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 July. Work will be presented by young performers from across the UK, in collaboration with international youth theatre groups. The line-up includes At The Root Theatre (West Lothian), The Gaiety Young Company (Ayrshire), CentreStage Dance Theatre (Kilmarnock), Follies Barne og Ungdomsteater / Children and Young People Theatre (Stavanger, Norway), Firefly Arts (Livingston), 1812 Youth Theatre (York), BRONKS (Brussels, Belgium), Theatre Alliance (Kilmarnock), NFYT & Sanctuary Queer Arts (All Scotland), and Glasgow Acting Academy (Glasgow)
